Scholarship Auditions

Scholarship auditions are held in the spring each year at Midwestern State University in the Fine Arts Building. [campus map]

Eligibility

Open to vocal students and all orchestral students in grades 8 – 12 living in Wichita Falls or up to 60 miles away, or studying with a teacher in the area.

Teachers need not be affiliated with a music teacher’s organization to enter students.

Performance at Wichita Falls Symphony Spring Luncheon (first place winners)

Monetary awards for top three in each category: $300, $200, $100

An overall winner will be featured at the December Wichita Falls Symphony Orchestra Concert

Scholarship Competition

APPLICATION INFORMATION

  • Applications will be available at schools and from music teachers or can be downloaded here in the Spring.
  • Application must be received by the WFSL Scholarship Committee – Entries without the entry fee in the correct amount will not be accepted.
  • Application fee is $20.00 for each participant
  • All information on the application must be completed.

General Rules

  1. Students must indicate their school grade level on entry form.  Students in grades 8 –12 compete for WFSL Scholarship.
  2. Decisions of the judges are final and may not be questioned by participants, parents, or teachers.
  3. Participants are notified by mail, email, or telephone of audition time.
  4. Accompanists (not tape or computer) must be used unless selection is originally for solo instrument without accompaniment.  Payment of the accompanist is the responsibility of the participant.
  5. Pianists/Vocalists:  repertoire is to be performed from memory to be considered for scholarship.
  6. Each participant must provide the judge with a full score (with all parts) of the music with measures numbered.  Judges are encouraged to consider the musicianship of the ensemble, not just the student performance.
  7. Selections must be no longer than 5 minutes.  At 5 minutes, the performance will be stopped in all rounds without disqualification.
  8. Except for piano, timpani, and marimba, participants must provide their own instruments.

Scholarship Information

  • Students will compete for first, second, or third place music scholarship awards in each category from the WFSL.   The WFSL Piano Scholarship is in honor of Febe Garcia.  The WFSL Strings Scholarship is in honor of Gail Key. The WFSL Winds Scholarship is in honor of Myloa Bielke.  The WFSL Vocal Scholarship is in honor of Patricia Haywood.
  • Scholarships are to be used to enhance private study in the auditioned musical area.
  • A reception honoring participants of competition will follow the competition while waiting for the judges’ decisions.  Winners will be announced at the reception.
